Many people in the Eastern Mediterranean countries believe the dolphin is lucky. They can be seen on paintings, amulets, and mixed with other good luck symbols. But others throughout the globe share in the belief in dolphins. These include the Maoris of New Zealand, natives of the Amazon region, North American Native Americans, Celts, and Australian Aboriginals. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Sumerians had myths and gods associated with the dolphin.
Today, the dolphin is recognized for its intelligence and is seen as a friend of humans, particularly seamen. Ancient people recognized these traits, too. Many of them built their livelihood around the sea and they believed dolphins had the power of life and success for their sea voyages. One example gave dolphin the power to drive fish into nets. Naturally, they built myths around them and had their gods associate with them. Today, the dolphin is still seen as a powerful symbol of luck.
If you are embarking on a voyage, like to fish, or could otherwise enjoy some of the ancient tradition of the dolphin, wear one!
